There were instances when the authorities clashed with students when diplomatic precautions failed to work; the It has been variously observed that tertiary institutions are veritable grounds for leadership training and development.

Labour disputes have become regular occurrences in Nigeria and the right to trade unionism has been constantly abused. Such unionism abuses and disputes often results in low productivity, which in turn affects the demand and supply chain of the economy.

The laws in the country are always not abided by, so rather than bargaining, unions embark on strike as first resort, thereby. Student Union leadership is formed to promote and defend the welfare needs of the Students’ Community in Nigerian Tertiary Education System.

Union leaders engage Government through dialogue on certain policies and the authorities of institutions to provide certain minimum services that will promote a sustained environment for academic interactions. The book looked at unions from two perspectives: first, what we called the monopoly face of union – unions acting as raisers of benefits for their members – and second, the voice face of unions, or how unions represented labour in the workplace and in the body politic, giving voice to people who otherwise wouldn’t have had much say.

The University Authorities recognize the students' Union Government as a relevant arm of the central Administration of the University. Although it is not compulsory that all students should participate fully in Students' Unionism, the University authorities expect all student to be financially involved in student Unionism for easy administration of students.
